Supporting a Resilient and Sustainable Healthcare System in Nepal
Under the Global Fund grant, COVID-19 Response Mechanism (C19RM), Save the Children is collaborating with the Government of Nepal to build a resilient and sustainable healthcare system. In consultation with the Management Division of the Department of Health Services, Government of Nepal, Save the Children procured and installed six waste management systems in hospitals and municipalities across the country for sustainable hospital waste management.
Save the Children successfully installed and handed over the first waste management system at Kanti Children’s Hospital in Kathmandu on October 31, 2023. The equipment has also been dispatched to various hospitals and municipalities in Damak, Nepalgunj, Butwal, and Dhangadi.
According to Laxmi Neupane, Nursing Officer at Kanti Children’s Hospital, "The equipment is user-friendly and saves time. We can switch it on, load the waste, and carry on with our other engagements. The process takes an hour for conversion, and after that, we can safely dispose of it as non-hazardous waste."
During the handover event, Dr. Pankaj Ray, Director of Kanti Children’s Hospital, appreciated the effort of Save the Children's Global Fund Program for providing a waste management system. According to him, "the support has enhanced infection prevention practices at the hospital."
The technology converts hazardous medical waste into non-hazardous waste, adhering to environmental and regulatory standards. Under the leadership of the Waste Management Division at Kanti Hospital, the hospital invested in the infrastructure for a suitable site for equipment installation. The division staff members were trained by the company for machine operation. The installation of the equipment in necessary locations will strengthen Nepal's sustainable healthcare system by minimizing the risks associated with hazardous medical waste disposal.
