Report Launch: Status of Child-Friendliness in Nepali Media 2020
A study titled ‘Status of Child-Friendliness in Nepali Media 2020’ commissioned by Save the Children together with Child Nepal paints a bleak picture of media coverage of children’s issues in Nepal, with the report revealing that only 2% of the news reports in Nepal’s mainstream media fully focused on children’s issues. The report was launched amid a program in Kathmandu on July 19, 2023. At the event, representatives from civil society called for a child-informed media, and news coverage concerning children as per Child Friendly Media Directive issued by Press Council of Nepal (PCN) in collaboration of Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ).
Presenting the findings, Dr. Kundan Aryal, one of the research team members and a media educator, said, “It is concerning that children’s issues are not getting due space in Nepali media. The media gatekeepers should be more aware of the gravity of and be more accepting of children’s issues. The media and civil society actors should collaborate for a child-friendly media in Nepal.”
Speaking at the event, Ayush Shrestha Joshi, Director of Advocacy, Communications, Campaigns and Media at Save the Children said, “There is a tendency of children’s issues being approached in a blanket manner without paying attention to the intersectionality during media coverage. This means that the voices of children with disabilities and LBGTIQ+ children, for example, are pushed to the margins. Save the Children is committed to working together with media and concerned stakeholders to ensure that children's voices are represented without any bias, and their issues are covered prominently. Furthermore, we are also committed to leverage the voices of children in mainstream media, to ensure that media is child-informed."
